GRETCHEN FOSTER

Gretchen Foster is a dedicated undergraduate student at Texas Tech University specializing in Global Studies, with minors in Russian and Artificial Intelligence. Originally a Business Management major, Gretchen realigned her degree plan to match a growing passion for international relations and the complicated dynamics of the modern world. This transition reflects her commitment to addressing global challenges through a multidisciplinary lens, combining linguistic proficiency with technical literacy.Raised in California, Gretchen is originally from Texas and now considers herself to be a proud resident of San Antonio, Texas, Gretchen’s worldview is shaped by a deep-seated fascination with Middle Eastern history and politics. She seeks to bridge the gap between traditional diplomatic studies and the evolving role of emerging technologies in global governance. This unique intersection of interests was solidified during a transformative AI internship in Israel. While the internship provided a rigorous environment to hone her technical capabilities, its most profound impact was the cultural immersion it offered. By working within Israel’s high-tech sector at John Bryce Technical Institute, Gretchen gained a nuanced understanding of the country’s internal diversity and, by extension, the broader complexities of the Middle East. This experience moved her beyond theoretical study, providing a firsthand look at how innovation and identity coexist in a pivotal geopolitical region. Gretchen’s academic and professional pursuits are driven by a desire to foster cross-cultural understanding and to leverage AI as a tool for informed global policy. As a fellowship candidate, she brings a rare blend of technical insight, linguistic ambition, and a proven willingness to follow her intellectual curiosity across borders. She is committed to continuing her exploration of the Middle East, utilizing her background in Global Studies to contribute meaningfully to international discourse and security.

He currently serves as the Camp Hoover Director and BBYO City Director/Teen Coordinator at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Columbus, where he oversees teen programming, leadership development initiatives, and year-round camp experiences. Before moving to Columbus, Justin spent several years at the Asheville JCC, where he helped design and expand youth programs, developed a comprehensive Leaders-in-Training program, and supported families and staff through the day-to-day rhythms of Jewish communal life. His work has continually centered on building environments where young people feel seen, supported, and empowered to lead. Justin is passionate about camp as a vehicle for identity formation, relationship-building, and community. His long-term goal is to direct an overnight Jewish summer camp that is both joyful and deeply values-driven, and he approaches his professional growth with that vision in mind. He believes that strong leadership requires curiosity, humility, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Justin joined the Inside the Middle East Fellowship out of a desire to deepen his understanding of the complex histories, narratives, and lived realities that shape Israel and the broader Middle East. As someone who regularly facilitates conversations about Israel with teens, families, and staff, he is committed to engaging with nuance, asking thoughtful questions, and fostering dialogue rooted in respect and empathy. When he is not at camp or working with teens, Justin enjoys exploring new ideas, planning creative programs, and staying connected with the communities that have helped shape his path. He is grateful for the opportunity to participate in the ITME Fellowship and looks forward to bringing what he learns back to the young people and families he serves.
