How will Sinwar’s death impact ongoing conflict | CTV CANADA invited Geopolitical Analyst and Middle East expert Avi Melamed | 2024 10 18

(00:00) Yaya Sinwar was a key figure in Hamas, particularly responsible for its military strength and the October 7 massacre.(00:36) His removal could impact two main areas: hostage negotiations and internal dissent in Gaza.(01:10) The death of Sinwar could create conditions for progress on hostages, but the situation remains uncertain.(01:49) Around 101 hostages are still held in Gaza, some by Hamas and others by local groups, with many feared dead or in poor condition.(02:24) There may be regional pressure to negotiate hostages’ release, but no immediate breakthrough is expected.(02:55) Hezbollah is expected to intensify attacks on Israel following Sinwar’s death, impacting the broader “Axis of Resistance.”(03:26) The Axis of Resistance includes groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and others, and has caused widespread destruction across the Middle East.(03:57) Israel’s actions have weakened the Axis of Resistance, which is seen as a major source of radicalism and destruction in the region.(04:33) Some countries in the region, like Lebanon, are urging Hezbollah to disarm, which presents an opportunity for regional stability.(05:05) The weakening of the Axis of Resistance could lead to better prospects for stability and peace for the people in the Middle East.
