Israel-Iran tensions rise amid fears of a mystery ‘kill list’ | Avi Melamed’s insights quoted in this article by the THE TIMES OF INDIA | April 12, 2024.
Avi Melamed, a former Israeli intelligence official, noted that this might be part of a broader strategy to deter Iran from further aggression. He explained, “It is part of the very complex picture of the deterrence in the region. There is a very complex game going on,” suggesting that Israel might take the conflict directly to Iranian soil to avoid the usual proxy wars.
The already volatile relationship between Israel and Iran intensified last week following the assassination of its top Iranian commander at the Iranian embassy in Damascus. While Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, the incident has led to heightened security concerns and possibly retaliatory actions, as both US and Israeli officials take the threats from Tehran seriously.
Iran may have prepared its own hit list of Israeli officials and diplomats to avenge the killing of a top general and six other military officers.
Elliott Abrams a former US deputy national security adviser shared his insights on the potential repercussions: “The logic… suggests to me that they will see if they have the option to attack an Israeli embassy or Israeli diplomats connected to an embassy or Israeli officials outside of Israel. That would be a parallel,” Indicating a possible Ave. for Iranian retaliation.
As per a Daily Beast report, the assassination has potentially altered the long standing ‘rules of the game’ between these two adversaries. Previously, confrontations were generally limited to proxy engagements, but the direct targeting of a high-ranking official could signify a shift towards more direct confrontations.
Israeli forces are reportedly preparing for possible counter-strikes against Iranian nuclear sites if Iran proceeds with the retaliation. Abrams emphasized the delicate balance of power saying, ““The rules of the game are changing in the sense that previously only Iranian proxies had been attacked… this is a change in the rules. What they’re saying to Iran is, ‘Be very careful, because we’re not going to take these kinds of attacks from Hamas or Hezbollah and other proxies without a very strong response against you.’”

The situation remains tense as global powers watch closely. the US has expressed its commitment to defending its personnel and interests in the region. Clear to the UN, Robert wood, reiterated this stance, saying, “we will not hesitate to defend our personnel,” and warned Iran and its proxies against escalating attacks on U.S. forces.
