Contextualizing Israel’s Nation State Law ~ New ADDITION to my Fall Lecture Tour

Given recent developments, I have decided to add a new lecture to my upcoming lecture tour to the US ~ November 5 to December 9, 2018. entitled: Identity of Paradoxes: Contextualizing Israel’s Nation State Law.

In July 2018, the Israeli Knesset passed the ‘Basic Law: Israel as the Nation-State of the Jewish People.’ The bill has generated an impassioned discussion within Israeli society, within and among Jewish communities around the world, and has been met with a wide variety of reactions in international circles. At its core, the Bill of Nations centers around identity. This lecture presents the major – sometime paradoxical – facets of Israeli identity today and offers observations which are also relevant to the current political and intellectual discussions in the West. This objective, unbiased, apolitical, and thought-provoking presentation, provides the wide context essential for a more constructive and productive conversation regarding identity.

I obtained Inside the Middle East Entering A New Era and thought I would find the explanation I was looking for. This book gave me so much more than I expected! Mr. Melamed is not only a skilled writer, but an excellent educator! There are so many layers to the power struggles and conflicts in the Middle East that a casual observer can’t fathom. Mr. Melamed presents an overall picture of a complicated area and then peels back the layers that hide the true motivations of the players in this region. If you're going to read ONE book about the Middle East, you MUST READ Inside The Middle East | Entering A New Era! The author does an incredible job of synthesizing events into one cohesive picture. The title does not disappoint. This book truly does take you inside the Middle East. Plus, the incredible number of maps really helped me follow the story in a very understandable way. Avi Melamed is a voice that must be heard in the West! He has written the most comprehensive, understandable, and reader-friendly book on the Middle East that I have ever encountered.
