A conventional narrative in the West is that the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict shapes the geopolitics of the Middle East. That theory is inaccurate, counterproductive, and, among other things, has contributed to Israel increasingly becoming a divisive issue for Jews and non-Jews around the world. The reality is the other way around…It is the Middle East that shapes and impacts the course and path of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. This seminar or course traces how events and developments in the Middle East shaped the conflict’s trajectory and course. Understanding the history and evolution of the conflict offers a platform to advance a mutually beneficial sustainable arrangement that could provide Israelis and Palestinians a breakthrough from the depressing and vicious cycle in which they are caught. No less important, it offers a framework for constructive, productive, and unifying conversations that bridge differing and opposing views. Can the changing Middle East offer an opportunity for Israelis and Palestinians to escape the cycle of violence they are both caught in? Is peace possible? And if not – what is possible? This course goes beyond emotional narratives, buzzwords, and theories and offers a framework for constructive, productive, and unifying conversations that can bridge differing and opposing views.
